One ridge, three curved bays, each with a differently shaded beach — the panorama from Padar’s upper viewpoint is the most photographed scene in Komodo National Park. The island is small and rugged, its steep hills gold in the dry season and deep green after the rains. Unlike Komodo and Rinca, Padar is not a wildlife stop: you come to climb, look, and photograph — which is why it pairs so well with dragon trekking and snorkelling later the same day.
How hard is the trek to the Padar viewpoint?
Moderate, and shorter than the photos suggest. The route from the jetty is a stepped path — a long staircase for most of its length — rising past a series of platforms, with the classic three-bay frame from the upper sections. Plan on 30-45 minutes up, less coming down; most reasonably fit visitors, from school-age children to active seniors, manage it comfortably. The honest notes, per 2026 conditions:
- Heat is the real challenge, not the gradient. The trail is fully exposed with no shade — start early.
- Footwear matters. Trainers or grippy sandals are enough; flip-flops make the loose upper sections harder.
- Bring water and a hat. There are no facilities on the trail.
- You do not need the summit for the view. The mid-level platforms already frame all three bays — guests with limited mobility can stop there and still take the postcard home.
When is the best time to hike Padar?
Hour of day: sunrise is the signature slot. First light falls between roughly 5:45 and 6:15 a.m. for most of the year, and being on the ridge for it means the best color over the bays and a cool climb — it takes a pre-dawn speedboat departure, or a night aboard a phinisi anchored near Padar. If that is too early, be climbing before 9:00 a.m.; by midday the trail is hot work.
Month: April to November is the dry season — clear skies, firm footing, golden hillsides. December to April turns the island dramatically green, with more rain and, in January-March, rougher seas that can occasionally delay or reroute crossings.
